Boxing champion survived where friends went astray

ST. LOUIS (AP) Devon Alexander was 7 when his mother gave in and let him join the new boxing program in his downtrodden neighborhood. He came home the first day crying, his nose bloodied from a sparring session with his friend Terrance Barker.

Fifteen years later, Alexander is the WBC 140-pound (63 1/2-kilogram) world champion.

And Barker, like so many of Alexander's childhood friends, is dead.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) A former national Golden Gloves boxing champion died two days after collapsing following a bout in Philadelphia.

Boxing promoter Dominic Pesoli said 25-year-old Francisco Rodriguez died Sunday night after losing a USBA super bantamweight bout against Teon Kennedy on Friday night. (MORE)

Andre Ward leaps atop super middleweight division

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Andre Ward left Oracle Arena hoping for just a normal Sunday in the Oakland suburbs, including plenty of church and family time with his wife and children.

OAKLAND, California (AP) American Andre Ward claimed the WBA super middleweight title from Denmark's Mikkel Kessler on Saturday in a bout that had to be stopped early, leaving the ex-champion's camp complaining of dirty tactics.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) With a stunning victory in his hometown, Andre Ward proved he's ready for the world.

Ward claimed the WBA 168-pound title with an unanimous technical decision over Denmark's Mikkel Kessler in the 11th round Saturday night, adding his first world championship belt to his Olympic gold medal. (MORE)

Erdei wins WBC cruiserweight title

KIEL, Germany (AP) Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Italian veteran Giacobbe Fragomeni on Saturday.

Erdei, who vacated the WBO light heavyweight title to step up a division, improved his record to 31-0 in his first fight as a cruiserweight. (MORE)

KIEL, Germany (AP) Zsolt Erdei of Hungary won the WBC cruiserweight title with a majority decision over Giacobbe Fragomeni on Saturday night.

Erdei vacated the WBO light-heavyweight title to fight at cruiserweight for the first time, and managed to do just enough against the 40-year-old Italian. Two judges had it 115-113 for Erdei, while the third scored it 114-114. (MORE)

Ward welcomes Kessler to US for title bout

OAKLAND, California (AP) Andre Ward feels he's been an underdog from the moment he was born. Even with his prodigious boxing gifts, his undefeated ring record and that Olympic gold medal, he still firmly believes that nobody gives him a chance.

Far too many young people fail to beat the same long odds in the hardscrabble neighborhoods of Oakland, his Bay Area hometown.
